About Me
I originally studied at art college before beginning my career as a roofer. After many years working hands-on with slate, I found myself returning to that creative background, using the material and practical skills I’d developed through my work in a completely different way.
Living and working on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, I’m surrounded by a landscape where slate and traditional craftmanship have a long history. My years in roofing have given me a real understanding of the material and a respect for its natural qualities – from the individual textures and markings of each piece to the subtle changes in colour as the slate responds to different light and weather.
Much of the slate I use is reclaimed from roofing projects, giving material that has already had a working life a completely new purpose while retaining its character and history.
My work includes freestanding sculptures, pieces for indoor and outdoor spaces, larger installations and sculptural water features. Each piece is individually made by hand, drawing on centuries-old slate-working traditions and tools, including the slate knife I use in my roofing work. The character of the slate itself often helps to shape how the finished work develops.
I’m continuing to experiment with new ideas and techniques, bringing together my creative background, years of practical experience and respect for the traditional craft of working with slate.
